About GreenFinger

GreenFinger is a viral campaign that will create a public statement the world’s leaders cannot ignore. GreenFinger is all about showing that climate change affects all of us, and the things we personally care about. It also shows that we, as individuals, have a responsibility to act and that through GreenFinger we have an opportunity to be heard. GreenFinger is not owned by a specific organization or network. It’s us. It’s you. So far thousands of people from all over the world have done one, including some Cabinet Ministers, Royals and celebrities.

It is easy, fun and important to get involved in the GreenFinger campaign as it links individuals and their concerns to the big and complex challenge of climate change. It is about providing a stage to the many perspectives we can have on the effects of climate change. It is about voicing individual concerns and giving a human scale to a global issue. On the other hand it’s all about unifying this into one message to the world leaders:  ‘We care about climate change, Copenhagen can’t fail’.

GreenFinger originally started as local grassroots campaign from Stepitup2007 and has seen some wonderful creativity since then. In June 2008 18 students from around the world gathered in the Arctic for a WWF program on climate change campaigning. While navigating through the (thin) pack ice around Spitsbergen they talked about GreenFinger and decided to turn this great concept into a global campaign.

At the next UN Climate Change talks in Copenhagen in December 2009 the world leaders will come together to decide on the follow-up of the Kyoto protocol, and thus how to solve the climate crisis. As this agreement will be the roadmap for the next decade it must be ambitious and future proof in order to prevent global warming causing serious societal, ecological and economic damage.

Science is clearly telling us that the next years are crucial to avoid us from passing thresholds on which we cannot turn back once we have crossed them. It is because of these facts that we need to ensure that the Copenhagen summit outcome is ambitious enough to avoid passing these dangerous tipping points and that this will be ratified by all world leaders.

We will display the GreenFingers, collected from all over the world, to the negotiators in Copenhagen in a way which cannot be ignored. Demonstrating that the world cares, and demands leadership.

Please join us in three simple steps:
